ATTENTION TO PUBLIC HEALTH

The teaching, research and extension carried out in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Psychology and Nursing are linked in many different ways to the public health sector. Here, as an example, we will refer only to the activities at the University Hospital, the institution offering the greatest number of services in Uruguay’s public health system.
The following chart presents information for the year 2001, prior to the national economic crisis, and from the three most recent years, in order to point out two phenomena that account for the hospital’s growth: the increase in visits to doctors, treatment and other attention solicited by those who used private medical facilities before the 2002 crisis and because of it were forced to depend upon the public health system; and the increase in highly specialized procedures, such as those carried out by the Institutes of Higher Specialization (IMAE), particularly in the areas of cardiology and nephrology.
