UNIVERSITY TEACHING

Access to those wishing to study at the tertiary level is free and open to all those who have completed the required course of studies at the high school level. According to data published in May 2007, the University of the Republic has almost 80,000 undergraduate students enrolled in all departments. This is more than 80% of all university students in the country. Fifty-five percent of students work as well as study. The percentage of women students has increased significantly; they now make up 63% of the total. In 2006, 4254 students obtained degrees at the UR.

The UR is also the country’s most important institution at the post-graduate level. In the decade to date, approximately 500 students a year earn a post-graduate degree. The following table shows the intermediate, graduate, and post-graduate degrees obtained in the different courses of study.
